ACT-SO Guidebook

The information contained in this Guidebook is for eligible student participants, community volunteers,
educators, mentors, as well as potential sponsors/supporters.
"An Olympics of the Mind", ACT-SO is the "brainchild" of the late Vernon Jarrett. An NAACP life
member and advocate for children, Jarrett was a pioneer African American national syndicated journalist.

After continually observing rising U.S. trends, which much too often indicated African-American
students among the ethnic groups with the lowest scholastic scores and highest dropout rates, particularly
in an overwhelming numbers of urban-centered school districts, he felt the need to do something to help
stem the tide of this serious nationwide problem.
